Week 2

Lecture outline

Two lectures will introduce cell injury and how cells and surrounding tissues respond to injury. The active or passive death of cells will be presented.

Cell injury 1

Created by Prof. Mike Dixon

Male age 73

Tissue: Liver

This man had a long history of congestive cardiac failure with, latterly, intractable ankle oedema and breathlessness. He had been managed on digoxin and diuretics but was admitted to hospital when these failed to control his condition. He deteriorated further and died 3 weeks after admission.

The cut surface shows a finely variegated pattern of red-brown (congested) areas with intervening pale yellow (fatty) areas.
