Two lectures will introduce cell injury and how cells and surrounding tissues respond to injury. The active or passive death of cells will be presented.

Male age 78

Tissue: Kidney

This man was admitted to hospital with a heart attack (myocardial infarction) two weeks prior to death. His condition gradually deteriorated and he died in cardio-respiratory failure. At post mortem his kidneys were obviously diseased.

The kidney contains several wedge shaped pale areas outlined by an intensely haemorrhagic rim.
