Acute inflammation 3

Created by Prof. Mike Dixon

Male age 1

Tissue: Brain

This child was found barely conscious in its cot. The head was retracted - a sign of meningitis, and emergency admission was arranged. Lumbar puncture confirmed the presence of infection and intravenous antibiotics were administered. Unfortunately, the child had a series of 'fits' and became deeply unconscious. The child died 14 hours after admission.

The blood vessels over the brain are deeply congested. There is an accumulation of pus over the temporal area. Culture revealed Haemophilus influenzae infection.
