This woman presented complaining of loss of energy, weight gain and constipation. On examination she had coarse dry hair and thinning of the eyebrows, and her skin was dry and cold. After laboratory tests, she was diagnosed as hypothyroidism. Look at the section of thyroid. What is the cause of her hypothyroidism?

The thyroid gland shows symmetrical atrophy.
